What is Toncoin?
Toncoin (TON) is the native asset of The Open Network, a Layer-1 blockchain originally designed by the Telegram team under the name Telegram Open Network. After regulatory pushback forced Telegram to step back in 2020, the project was picked up by the open-source community and relaunched as The Open Network (TON).
TON is closely integrated with Telegram's user base of nearly a billion people. Users can create TON wallets inside the Telegram app, send Toncoin to anyone by username, and interact with on-chain mini-apps directly through Telegram's bot interface - which has made TON one of the fastest-growing consumer chains in crypto.
How does TON work?
TON is a sharded Proof-of-Stake chain designed for extreme scalability. Its architecture divides execution across workchains (independent chains with their own rules) and shardchains (dynamic partitions within a workchain), with a masterchain coordinating global state. This allows the network to split load automatically as demand grows.
Smart contracts on TON are written in an asynchronous message-passing model that differs from the EVM's synchronous execution. Developers use languages like FunC, Tact and Tolk to build contracts, and the network supports native storage, DNS, payment channels and a light-client-first design.
